A nap on a rainy afternoon with nowhere to be is one of the cheapest luxuries in the world.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Rest with no justification attached is harder to allow yourself than rest you have earned. An afternoon asleep while rain carries on outside takes nothing from anybody, produces nothing, and leaves you better than it found you. It feels like a luxury because it is scarce rather than expensive. Nobody is ever going to schedule one on your behalf.

Schedule one yourself this week. Find the afternoon with the fewest obligations in it, tell whoever needs telling, and sleep for an hour. If sleep does not come, lie there anyway and do not count that as a failure.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When was your last afternoon with nowhere you had to be?
