Fluency doesn’t arrive on a set day. One morning you just notice you stopped translating in your head.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Thresholds get noticed afterwards, never crossed on purpose. There is no morning you become fluent; there is a morning you realise you followed a whole conversation without the little lag of translating, and the crossing happened some unremarkable week before that. The arrival is always a discovery rather than an achievement.

So stop testing yourself for it, because testing is what makes the lag come back. Keep the contact going instead: the show, the conversation, the hour. One day you will catch yourself already across, and that is the only way anybody ever gets there.
