Change your mind about ideas fast when the evidence is good. Change your mind about people slowly.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Ideas should be cheap to drop, because an idea has no feelings and the evidence is usually there to be looked at. People are different: one bad afternoon, one piece of second-hand gossip, one misread message is a thin basis for rewriting somebody you have years of experience of. Speed is a virtue in the first case and a liability in the second.

When something you believe takes a hit, update it that day rather than defending it out of habit. When somebody disappoints you, wait a week and get the fuller picture first. Different clocks for different things.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Have you written someone off faster than you dropped an idea?
