Sometimes a step back in title is a step forward in skills.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

What you are called and what you can do come apart more often than people expect. Moving to a smaller title in a place where you will actually learn something can leave you better off in two years than holding a grander label while standing still. Titles are read by strangers; skills are what you take with you.

When you weigh a move, ask what you will be able to do a year from now that you cannot do today. Let that answer outrank the name of the role. Then be willing to explain the choice plainly to anyone who finds it odd.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Would you take a smaller title to learn something real?
