When you stop being “the athlete,” you find out how many other things you never had time to be.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

One demanding thing can quietly take up all the available space. Training, travel and recovery fill a calendar so completely that other interests never get a trial, and you end up with a single answer to the question of who you are. Losing that answer is disorienting, and it also opens a surprising amount of room.

If your main thing has ended or is ending, use the first free month to try two things badly. A class, an instrument, a job, a club, something with no history attached. You are allowed more than one answer about yourself.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would you try if your main commitment disappeared tomorrow?
