No app can give you the nerve to order food badly in a new language. Only ordering food badly does that.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Vocabulary and nerve are two separate skills, and only one of them can be learned on a screen. You can know every word for lunch and still freeze at the counter, because the hard part is tolerating the pause, the accent and the small chance of being misunderstood in public. That tolerance gets built by doing it badly in front of somebody.

Use the language this week on something low stakes: a coffee, a question, directions you already know. Expect to be clumsy, and let the other person switch if they want. Count the attempt, not the performance.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What are you still only practicing on a screen?
