If someone on your team is struggling and you only notice their output, you’re managing numbers, not people.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Output is the last thing to change. By the time the numbers drop, whatever is going on has usually been going on for weeks, and the drop is a late and very incomplete description of it. Watching only the result means you always arrive after the point where help would have been easy.

Notice the earlier signals instead: the quiet, the lateness, the person who stopped asking questions. Ask once, plainly and privately, and be ready for the answer to have nothing to do with work. If they would rather not say, leave the door open instead of pressing.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose struggle have you noticed only through their results?
