Leading your peers means asking a lot more than telling. They don’t owe you obedience.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Authority over your own friends does not exist, and pretending otherwise is how peer leaders lose the room. Nobody your age has to do what you say, which means every bit of cooperation you get is given rather than owed. Questions work where orders do not, because a question invites someone in while an order tests whether they will take it.

For the next week, turn your instructions into questions wherever you honestly can. Ask whether somebody can take the setup instead of announcing that they have it. Keep the handful that genuinely are not negotiable, and say why they are not.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Do you ask your friends or instruct them?
