The people you were nice to before you were in charge decide how long you stay in charge.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

The way you treated people when you needed nothing from them is the record they consult once you suddenly have authority. Nobody forgets being overlooked, and nobody is in a hurry to help somebody who only became friendly when it got useful. That is why being decent while you are nobody turns out to be the most practical thing you ever did.

Be straight with the people around you now, well before you want anything. If there is somebody you have been dismissive of, start treating them properly. Repairing this early is far easier than explaining it later.
