Want influence with a friend? Be someone they can tell bad news to without getting a lecture.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

People decide who they bring hard things to long before they need to. If telling you something difficult comes with a cost, you will hear it late or not at all, and you will miss the point where you could have helped. Holding the advice back feels passive and is actually what keeps the door open. You cannot be useful to somebody who has stopped telling you things.

Next time a friend admits something that worries you, say thanks for telling me and stop there. Ask what they want from you before offering an opinion. Keep the advice for when they ask for it.
