The older scout who teaches knots to the new kid ends up knowing them better than anyone.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Teaching something forces you to find out whether you actually know it. You have to break it into steps, explain the bit you have always done by feel, and answer questions you never thought to ask yourself. The gaps show up fast, and filling them is what moves you from being able to do a thing to understanding it. The new kid is doing you a favour.

Take one skill you are reasonably good at and teach it to somebody this week, out loud, start to finish. Where you stumble is where your knowledge is thin. Go fix that part before you teach it again.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would you understand better if you had to teach it tomorrow?
