Sit in a quiet room with a ticking clock for one minute. You’ll learn how rarely you actually feel time pass.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Most of your hours get spent somewhere other than the present, and a minute without distraction makes that embarrassingly clear. Sixty seconds of nothing feels enormous because you almost never experience time directly, only through whatever you were watching while it went past. That is how whole weeks vanish. The time was there and you were not.

Do the actual experiment once this week: one minute, no screen, nothing to do. It will be uncomfortable and it is only a minute. Then notice how much of today you were really present for, which is the useful and slightly alarming part.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did you last notice a minute going by?
