Your first job won’t feel like your career. It’s the part where you learn what showing up means.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Early work is mostly beside the point in terms of content. What it installs is the base layer: being somewhere at a set time, doing things you did not choose, being responsible to people who are not your friends. Those transfer to everything afterwards, including work you actually care about. Nobody is good at them without having done them.
Treat the showing-up part seriously even when the job is not serious. Be on time, do the boring task properly, learn one person’s name a shift. You are building a reference and a habit at the same time, and both outlast the job.
What has showing up somewhere taught you about yourself?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
