Players swear the ball was out until the replay says otherwise. Certainty and accuracy are different things.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

The feeling of being sure comes from a different part of you than the part that gets things right. That is why the player is not lying when the replay disagrees; the conviction was genuine, it just was not connected to the evidence in the way it felt connected. Nothing inside you flags the difference.

So treat your own certainty as information about you rather than about the world. When you catch yourself at maximum sureness, that is the moment to ask what you actually saw and from where. Saying you might be wrong about the detail costs nothing and saves you a week of defending a mistake.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which call did you argue about before the replay proved otherwise?
