Every star you see on a clear night is a sun. Some are far bigger than ours. Small-looking isn’t small.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

How big something looks is mostly a statement about how far away you are standing. Each of those points of light is a sun, several of them enormous, and the only reason they are specks is distance. Plenty of things in your life are getting that treatment: the small town, the job somebody does, the person who never says much.

Take one thing you have filed as minor and get closer to it. Ask somebody what their work actually involves, or find out what the quiet kid does outside school. You will come away with something much larger than the speck you had.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who looks small from here and probably isn’t?
