Raising volume rarely improves evidence.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Volume changes the emotional temperature and not the evidence. When someone gets louder, what they are usually signalling is that they feel unheard or that they have run out of argument, and the other person responds to the threat rather than to the content.

If your voice is rising, that is worth treating as information rather than as strategy. Lower it deliberately and say what you actually need. And when someone raises theirs at you, the useful question is what they are afraid is not being registered.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did you get louder because your argument was getting weaker?
