A mentor who only praises you is a fan. A mentor tells you what the fans won’t.

Praise is pleasant and mostly uninformative. Anybody can tell you that you did well, and the person worth keeping is the one who will say the uncomfortable specific thing: that your second half was lazy, that the writing is vague, that the problem is you not listening. That sentence costs them more than a compliment does. It is also the only part you can act on.
Ask one person you respect for the thing they have not told you yet, and make it easy by naming the area. Then do not argue with the answer in the moment. Say thanks, go away, and check whether they were right.
Who tells you the hard part your supporters leave out?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
