How you treat the new hire on their first night is your real reputation at work.

GRATITUDE
First nights get observed by everybody. The new person is anxious and useless through no fault of their own, and how you handle that, whether you explain things or let them flounder for the entertainment, is the clearest signal your coworkers will ever get about what you are like. They are watching more closely than the new hire is. Nobody forgets who was decent on day one.
If somebody starts this week, tell them your name twice, show them the one thing that is confusing, and sit with them on a break. It takes ten minutes, and you are building the person who covers your shift later.
What did you do for the last newcomer on shift?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
