Respect a friend’s “I don’t want to talk about it.” Being there doesn’t require a full report.

Not every form of help involves talking. Sometimes a person knows what is wrong and has no interest in narrating it again, and pressing for details turns your support into something they have to manage. Presence works without information. Sitting in the same room, driving somewhere, playing something stupid for an hour: all of that says you are not alone without requiring a detail.
Take the sentence at face value and stop asking. Offer company instead: a walk, a lift, food, a film with no conversation attached. And say once that you are around if they do want to talk, then leave the offer standing without renewing it every day.
Which friend do you keep pressing for details they will not give?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
