The relative who translates at appointments can become an adult in one room and a child again at home.

A child interpreting for their parents at an office holds adult power for an hour. They carry the vocabulary, the forms, the doctor’s meaning, and then they go home and are a child again, subject to the same authority they just stood in for. Moving between those two positions repeatedly is a strange and demanding thing, and it is almost never named. Competence in one room does not transfer to standing in the other.

If this was or is your role, notice that the whiplash was real rather than something you should have managed better. If you are on the other side of it, say plainly that the help was work. Acknowledging the load does not undo it, but going unacknowledged is most of what makes it heavy.
