The player who notices a teammate struggling can help before the coach has to stop everything.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

The people beside you see things the person in charge cannot. From the middle of it you can tell when someone’s timing is off, when they have stopped talking, when they are about to make the same mistake again, and you can say something in four seconds. Waiting for authority to intervene turns a small adjustment into a public correction with an audience.

When you notice someone struggling near you, say the useful thing directly rather than looking around for who should handle it. Keep it specific and short. Being the person who does that changes a group faster than any speech about culture.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who near you is struggling in a way only a peer would see?
