You can outgrow a habit before you have a new identity to explain it.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Change often waits for a story. People keep doing something long after they have stopped wanting it, because stopping seems to require becoming a person who does not do it, and that person does not exist yet. In practice the leaving comes first and the explanation catches up months later.

You can simply stop, without a word about what it means or what you are becoming. Say you do not feel like it at the moment when someone asks. The identity assembles itself out of the choices rather than the other way around.
