The person leaving a role deserves time to teach the person taking it.

Overlap gets treated as a luxury and cut first, which is how organizations lose years of knowledge in a fortnight. The person leaving holds a great deal that was never written down, most of it retrievable only when a specific question comes up. Squeeze that into a final afternoon and both people are set up to fail, one feeling guilty and one feeling stranded.
Build real overlap into the plan, and protect the leaver’s last weeks from new work. Let the new person do the job while the old one watches, not the other way round. Write down the questions that come up, since those are the actual handover.
What knowledge would leave the building if you left tomorrow?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
