A setback becomes easier to discuss when it is not treated as a confession of weakness.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

People hide trouble when telling the truth about it feels like handing over evidence. If a stumble is heard as proof that someone is not up to the work, silence becomes the sensible response, and the problem grows in the dark. Difficulty is ordinary in anything worth doing, and treating it that way is what makes it speakable.

You control this mostly by how you react in the first thirty seconds. When someone brings you bad news, ask what they need before asking how it happened. Mention your own current difficulty out loud sometimes, plainly and without drama, so that admitting one costs less around you.
