A milestone can mark a private change even when the outside of life looks similar.

Some of the most significant changes are invisible from outside. A year without something, a fear faced quietly, a decision finally made and held: none of it shows up in a photograph, and there is no one to congratulate you. That absence can make the change feel unreal, as though it only counts once someone else has registered it.

Mark one of yours in some small way you choose: a date noted, a meal, an hour taken on purpose. Tell one person if you want to, or nobody. The point is that it gets acknowledged by the person it happened to.
