A favorite dish becomes generous when its maker shares the method without hiding a step.

Withholding one detail keeps a recipe attached to the person who made it, which is a small form of holding on. The dish stays theirs, and everyone else’s version comes out subtly wrong for reasons they cannot locate. Giving the whole method away means the thing can outlive you and be made by people you will never meet. That is a genuine loss of a certain standing and a genuine gift.
If someone has asked how you make something, write it down properly, including the part you usually leave out. And if a person in your family cooks something you love, ask them to show you rather than tell you.
What do you know that you have never fully taught anyone?
