Character becomes visible where reward and responsibility move in opposite directions.

The revealing situations are the ones where doing the right thing gains you nothing. When reward and responsibility point the same way, everyone looks good. When taking responsibility costs you and shirking it would cost nothing, what you do is a direct reading of your character rather than of your incentives.
Watch for those moments and treat them as the ones that count. The unclaimed mistake, the task nobody would assign you, the correction that makes you look worse. Doing the right thing there is largely unwitnessed, which is precisely why it is the part that becomes you.
When did doing the right thing cost you a reward?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
