The family phrase you stop using may mark a quiet change in what your home permits.

Households change through vocabulary before they change through rules. A joke that no longer gets made, a nickname that has fallen away, a phrase about somebody that nobody repeats now: each disappearance is a small decision about what is acceptable here, usually taken without discussion. Nobody announced it, and everybody noticed. Language is where a family’s standards tend to move first.
Think about what has gone quiet in your own house and whether you are glad of it. If a phrase still in use has started to sit badly, you can simply stop saying it and watch it drift out. Changing the words is often easier than arguing the principle.
