To a reasonable creature, that alone is insupportable which is unreasonable; but everything reasonable may be supported.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Most of what makes a hardship feel unbearable is not its weight but its senselessness. A long shift you understand the point of is tiring; the same shift with no point is corrosive. When you can see why a thing is being asked, and agree that the why holds, you find you can carry a surprising amount. What breaks people is effort they cannot connect to anything.

If something has become intolerable, ask whether the problem is the load or the reason. Sometimes you find the reason and the load stays but stops grinding, and sometimes you find there is no reason, which is itself the answer you needed.
