You don’t need a stage. A lunch table is a big enough platform for kindness.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Influence gets imagined as scale: a stage, an audience, a following. Meanwhile the only thing you have real power over is the eight feet around you, where somebody is deciding right now whether this place is safe. Moving over to make room is not a smaller version of doing good. For the person you moved over for, it is the whole thing.

Look for someone eating alone, standing at the edge, or new this week, and go over. No speech is needed, a question and a seat will do. Do it without telling anyone afterwards, and let the size of it stay exactly as small as it is.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who sits near you at lunch and rarely gets included?
