LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Authority is easy to read by who does the unpleasant jobs. Leadership that has to be signalled with status is usually thin, while the people others actually follow are the ones lifting the boring end of things without mentioning it. Doing the low task when you have the standing not to is the clearest message available. Nobody has to be told what it means.

Take the least glamorous job on your team this week, unasked and unannounced. Stack the chairs, do the setup, cover the shift nobody wants. Watch how differently people listen to you afterwards, though that is a side effect rather than the reason to do it.
