You met them on their worst Tuesday. Don’t write their whole biography off one chapter.

First encounters are unreliable evidence because everyone has weeks they would not want summarised. The person you met might have been tired, grieving, worried about something they were not going to mention. What you recorded as their character may have been the state they happened to be in that day.

Give people you did not warm to a second and third sample before deciding. Notice whether the same thing shows up when the circumstances are different, because pattern is the real information. It costs you very little to leave the file open, and occasionally you get a friend out of it.
