Hospital floors are quiet at night, but nobody there is resting. Pressure doesn’t always look loud.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Serious strain is often silent. The loudest rooms are not the ones under the most pressure, and the people carrying the heaviest things frequently look calm and unremarkable while they do it. If you only recognise difficulty when it shouts, you will miss most of it, including your own.

Look again at somebody who seems to be managing perfectly, and ask them a real question this week. Notice too whether your own quiet is calm or just contained. Being steady on the outside is a useful skill, and it is not the same thing as being fine.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose quiet strain have you mistaken for calm?
