A camp counselor’s real job isn’t the activity. It’s noticing which kid hasn’t laughed all day.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

The activity is the container rather than the point. What a kid remembers from a week is whether anybody noticed them, and noticing means looking at the quiet one instead of only managing the loud ones. The same holds for any group you will ever be responsible for, which is why the real work is attention more than organization.

Scan for the person who has not spoken or laughed today and go stand near them. Ask something small and specific rather than whether they are okay. Do it again tomorrow if the answer was thin.
