Rules with reasons survive after the captain graduates. Rules without reasons die that same week.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Rules survive by being understood, because understanding is the only part that transfers to people who were not there when it was made. Without the reason, the next group inherits an arbitrary instruction from somebody who has left, and they are right to drop it. With the reason, they can keep it, adapt it or decide it no longer applies, which is what you actually want.

Write the reason beside each rule you are leaving behind, even briefly. Tell the people coming up why, not only what. Anything you cannot justify is probably not worth passing on.
