Awkwardness between two people who barely know each other is the expected condition, not a verdict on whether they suit each other. Ease comes from shared references and a few hours of practice at talking to this specific person, none of which exists yet on a first attempt. Judging compatibility from the most artificial version of a situation is a poor test.

Give something a second go before deciding, whether that is a person, a class, or a club where you knew nobody. Choose a setting with something to do in it. Notice whether it was easier than last time.
